Balboa Park Cultural Partnership member organizations have made huge strides in sustainability over the past eight years with the help of the Balboa Park Sustainability Program. We are proud of their accomplishments, and for the past three years, have recognized innovative projects with our own Balboa Park Sustainability Awards. Several organizations have also gained national recognition through PIC Green’s Sustainability Excellence Award, which showcases sustainability progress in multiple arenas, such as building operations, programming, and exhibits.
PIC Green conceived the Sustainability Excellence Award in order to advance the mission of establishing museums as leaders in environmental stewardship. Since 2014 the award has recognized and encouraged large and small institutions to incorporate green practices and infrastructure in their public forum.
Balboa Park is home to last year’s winner in the Exhibitions category with the San Diego Natural History Museum’s entry of their permanent exhibit, Coast to Cactus in Southern California, that exemplifies the importance of our region as a biodiversity hotspot, which is unique to most parts of the world. The San Diego Natural History Museum also received an honorable mention for the implementation of green practices in PROBEA Smart Schools in the Baja California Peninsula.
We hope to have multiple Sustainability Excellence Awards in Balboa Park with this year’s submissions, due January 31, 2017!
