For the November OPOT Get-Together, One Park-One Team joined forces with the Balboa Park Sustainability Program on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day! America Recycles Day is a Keep America Beautiful national initiative dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. To honor the holiday and Balboa Park’s green initiatives, One Park-One Team and the Sustainability Program hosted an energy-saving fair in Casa del Prado with TechniArt for Park team members and the public to shop energy-efficient products. For Park team members we invited Republic Services to share recycling tips and best practices and EnviroGreen Electronic Recycling Services to recycle electronic waste for free. San Diego Gas & Electric also joined us to share energy-saving tips and resources.
More than 40 Park team members from nine organizations joined us to learn Recycling 101 and donate their e-waste including old batteries, fluorescent bulbs, CD’s and computers. In total, Envirogreen collected 900 pounds of electronic waste from Park team members while TechniArt’s energy-saving fair sold 36 LED lightbulbs, equal to 2,030 kWh saved and 3,126 pounds of CO2 emissions reduced annually. Attendees also played recycling games, won sustainable prizes and enjoyed fresh smoothies from Vitality Bowls. In the spirit of sustainability, we served these smoothies in attendees’ own cups and our OPOT tumbler mugs with reusable straws!
We’d like to thank each of these green resources for joining us to celebrate the occasion and spread awareness of green options with our Park team members! The Sustainability Program’s mission is to support the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership’s member organizations in advancing Balboa Park toward a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable future. We’re proud to partner with these organizations to continue to advance solutions that help protect Park resources and strengthen economic viability, all while enhancing visitor experience and the enjoyment of Balboa Park.
